Turpentine

For years, I have loved the Brandi Carlile song Turpentine from her album The Story (2007). The first time I heard it, it made me cry as I grieved people, places, and things I’ve lost throughout the years. The lyrics are especially meaningful right now. This series of paintings was inspired by the song and captures what I choose to focus on right now - the beauty of the sky in all its messiness.

I chose to paint on circle panels because it reminds me what it was like to lay on the ground as a child and look up at the sky. I framed them in embroidery hoops because they instantly take me back to being young and working on cross stitches with my sisters.
